GlobalPittsburgh shares news of its needs for host families from July through next January for various cohorts of visitors, including Korean English teachers, Chinese students, and Japanese students from Yasuda University.

Love Ramen's Atwood Street location temporarily closed for renovations; new spot on Fifth Ave. open.

The Love Ramen at 229 Atwood St. in Oakland (map) is temporarily closed for renovations. During that time, according to a county inspection report, it will revamp the menu and add a new bathroom. A new self-serve noodle place from the owners of Love Ramen opened this month at 3608 Fifth Ave. (map), in what was formerly Hanami and Thai Hana. Staff refer to the place as Love Ramen in English, though it exists online as Malaxiangguo because the lone English-language signage on the window is an advertisement for hot pot.

Free Chinese, Japanese, Korean classes in Pittsburgh in June.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will continue to offer free Chinese, Japanese, and Korean classes at some of its branches this June. Check out the class information below in addition to its language resources on the shelves and online.

As the library notes: these classes are free; registration is not required; no materials are needed and nothing needs to be bought; new participants are welcome at any time; classes are for adults (unless otherwise noted) but well-behaved young people are welcome to join as well.

A pagdiriwang celebration and the dedication of the new Philippine Nationality Room in the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning are scheduled for June 9. Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama will perform in Pittsburgh on June 8 as part of Pride Rocks PGH. Dazed wrote, in 2017:

“Being east Asian and trying to be a pop singer in the UK where there is no precedent has sometimes been quite hard,” says London-based musician and model Rina Sawayama. “There aren’t many east Asian singers in the western pop world.”

Sawayama’s music, which she describes as “cute R&B with a subliminal pop sheen”, takes influence from her early childhood in Tokyo, where she weaned herself on J-pop (having “literally missed the boat” on the Spice Girls). Her glistening track “Cyber Stockholm Syndrome”, the first from her planned album, tingles with a Justin Timberlake-esque guitar hook and spotlights anxiety in the digital age.

She will open for Toni Braxon, the event's headliner. Tickets for the standing-room only show are available online.

A Chinese calligraphy expert will show us pictures of her home in China, give background on the art of calligraphy, and lead a Chinese calligraphy workshop for all ages! You’ll want to come early to be sure you MAKE it on time.

2018 Chinese film Long Day's Journey Into the Night (地球最后的夜晚) in Pittsburgh, from June 21.

The 2018 Chinese film Long Day's Journey Into the Night (地球最后的夜晚) will play in Pittsburgh from June 21 through 27. An April Atlantic review calls it "a gorgeous and impossible puzzle of a movie that could become a cult hit when it arrives in the United States."

The plot of Long Day’s Journey, which has nothing to do with the Eugene O’Neill play of the same name, centers on three characters: Luo (played by Huang Jue), a man haunted by his time as a youth in 2000; Luo’s long-lost lover, Wan Qiwen (Tang Wei); and a childhood pal named Wildcat, who was murdered. Roughly 20 years after Wildcat’s death, Luo tries to find Qiwen again and dig into the mystery of what happened between them decades prior. But any simple explanation for what’s going on is never offered. As Long Day’s Journey progresses, its meaning becomes more elusive, and its narrative strands stubbornly refuse to tie together.

Church in Pittsburgh will host a free "A Night in China" concert on May 25, featuring Yang Jin, Mimi Jong, and other musicians playing traditional Chinese instruments. The performance runs from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at 7110 Penn Ave. (map).

Self-serve Chinese noodle place opens in Oakland.

A self-serve noodle place from the owners of Love Ramen has opened on Fifth Ave. in Oakland. The restaurant carries the name Malaxiangguo online, likely owing to a sign advertising hot pot outside, though staff refer to it as Love Ramen in English. It is located at 3608 Fifth Ave. (map). Signage went up in April in the spot formerly occupied by much-maligned Thai Hana and the short-lived Hanami, both of which struggled with cleanliness and food service violations.

Pittsburgh premiere of Funan, July 5 through 11 at Row House Cinema.

Row House Cinema will present the Pittsburgh premiere of Funan, a French film about a Cambodian mother's search for her child kidnapped during the Khmer Rouge coup, from July 5 through 11. From the film's official site:

The proceeds will help fund the annual OCA Free Medical & Dental Clinic and OCA Pittsburgh’s mission of advocacy, civic engagement, community outreach and cultural education programs. Founded in 1973, OCA is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans.

In April we noticed signage for The Magic Noodle (十面八方) in the spot in Squirrel Hill vacated by Sun Penang. This month the restaurant opened after its initial inspection. The new restaurant at 5829 Forbes Ave. (map) is run by the man behind How Lee, located at the corner of Forbes and Shady Aves.

Details were just announced for the Pittsburgh screening of the 2019 movie Sound! Euphonium: Oath's Finale (劇場版 響け！ユーフォニアム〜誓いのフィナーレ〜) on July 11. The Anime News Network provides a summary:

In the film's story, Kumiko is now a second year and one of the senior players of the euphonium section. With new underclassmen joining the concert band, Kumiko will have to learn new things in order to deal with awkward and difficult underclassmen. She and third-year trumpeter Tomoe Kabe have been chosen to lead the new underclassmen members. Among the new members to Kumiko's bass section are euphonist Kanade Hisaishi, whose appearances are deceiving; tuba player Mirei Suzuki, who cannot adapt to her new environment; tuba player Satsuki Suzuki, who wants to get along with Mirei; and double bassist Motomu Tsukinaga, who cannot talk about himself. Between the Sunrise Festival, chair placement auditions, and the competition, a number of problems quickly begin to arise.

The first half of the story, in the form of the 2018 film Liz and the Blue Bird, did not play in Pittsburgh.
