Films telling stories from Korea, Japan, China, and Thailand are among the dozens playing at the 2019 Pittsburgh Shorts Festival from November 1 through 7.

The Korean films are Haenyeo on November 4,
This documentary explores the dwindling ancient culture of women free-divers known as Haenyeo, from Marado island off the coast of South Korea.
and In the Absence on November 5.
A passenger ferry sank off the coast of South Korea in 2014 and over three hundred people lost their lives. Years later, the victims’ families are still demanding justice.
The Japanese films are Homesick on November 3
Two years after a nuclear disaster, a man braves danger and wanders through the no-go zone to salvage heirlooms and come to terms with a devastating loss.
and Riceballs on November 2.
A father and son attempt to overcome a devastating loss, while also grappling with questions of cultural identity before finding a surprising source of connection, inspiration, and healing.
Other selections include the Chinese film Sister and the Singaporean-Thai film The Translator. The films play at the Southside Works Cinema and tickets are available online.
