The University of Pittsburgh will present a conversation on "Advocating for the Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities at Pitt" on July 29, part of the 2021 Diversity Forum.

This workshop is intended to help advocates at the University of Pittsburgh understand the specific issues facing the AAPI and Asian communities in Pittsburgh and the country. It consists of a presentation followed by discussion and then a question/answer session. The primary speaker is Sunny Yang (Attorney, an officer and former board member of Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania and a member and former Chair of the Asian Attorneys Committee of the Allegheny County Bar Association), who will be joined by Seung-Hwan Shin (Lecturer in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures) and Paris Yamamoto (Pitt undergraduate and former president of the campus Japanese Students Association).

"American Interventionism and its Role in Southeast Asian Deportation," July 28 at Pitt.

The University of Pittsburgh will present "American Interventionism and its Role in Southeast Asian Deportation" as part of its 2021 Diversity Forum on July 28.

When discussing the rise of hate toward East and Southeast Asian Americans, the state sanctioned violence towards these communities -namely Southeast Asians -is often overlooked. These attacks are not individual, but rather institutional, and date back to American interventionism beginning in the former half of the 20th century. Since President Biden’s inauguration 2,886 immigrants have been deported, despite a campaign promise of a 100-day deportation moratorium. These deportations have affected not only the Asian American community, but also the Black and LatinxAmerican communities. In this workshop, we will discuss the theories driving American foreign policy during the 20th century and the effects of American interventionism on Southeast Asian countries to provide a framework for our primary focus on modern state violence towards Southeast Asian Americans in the form of deportations. This workshop aims to educate participants about how this American intervention has led to current refugee populations and the Southeast Asian diaspora, causing the immigration and deportation issues today, as we cannot act before we are informed. We hope this event will build coalitions between the Asian American community and other marginalized populations in order to engage in collective action against systemic oppression. At the end of the event, we will also provide a tool kit to participants with ways to help families affected by deportation and action items to stop this state.

It runs from 10:45 am to 12:00 pm and is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

The Managing Editor is primarily responsible for coordinating the Journal’s workflow using Editorial Manager, CUP’s online platform, to communicate with authors, associate editors, book review editors, the production team at CUP and staff in the AAS secretariat, especially the digital media manager. Specific responsibilities will extend to supporting the editorial work of the Asian Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Seventy-five percent effort will be committed to The Journal of Asian Studies and twenty-five percent to the Asian Studies Center. Applicants must have relevant work experience, well-developed organizational skills, and expertise in communication. Serving as the predominant point of contact for an editor, the employee will need to tactfully utilize his/her technical skills, as well as diplomatic and interpersonal skills, to meet the operational and deadline-driven requirements of the journal with uncompromised high quality. As an administrator of the online review and notification system, the incumbent will assist in assuring that there is accurate and time-critical flow of assignments and correspondence regarding the operation of the journal. Attention to detail is an absolute necessity, as well as evident meticulous organizational skills. Must be able to use judgement to trouble-shoot and problem-solve. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with thorough knowledge of English grammar. Knowledge of Asia and Asian studies is highly recommended but not required. The 2020 Japanese animated film Josee, The Tiger and The Fish (ジョゼと虎と魚たち) will play in Pittsburgh on July 12 and 13.

In Josee, The Tiger and the Fish, there isn't a magical world to which our protagonist, Kumiko, can escape, aside from her own vibrant imagination. Kumiko prefers to be called Josee, a character from one of her favorite books. Unable to use her legs from birth, Josee, now in her early 20s, is cared for by her loving but controlling grandmother, who forbids her to leave the house except on short walks. It’s on one of these walks that Josee loses control of her wheelchair and careens down a steep hill. Luckily, her fall is stopped by Tsuneo, a university student who lives in the area. The night Tsuneo inadvertently saves Josee, her grandmother offers him a new job with better pay than most: to look after her granddaughter. The two begin to venture from home, to movies, amusement parks, aquariums and even the ocean. Josee begins to emerge from her shell, sharing with Tsuneo her passion for drawing and her ambition to become an artist. Soon Tsuneo begins to understand all the complexities of life without the use of one’s legs, from navigating train lines with a wheelchair to simply cooking a meal at home.

Nanban Asian Soul Food now open in Lawrenceville.

A new restaurant by Roger Li, Nanban Asian Soul Food, has opened recently in Lawrenceville, taking over the spot that used to hold another of Li's restaurants, Ki Pollo.

The concept of "Nanban" goes back to the 16th and 17th century in Japan when the very first "Westerners" began trading with the locals. It was a period of exploring new culture, and exchanging and above all it translates to "something foreign" which we liked and flipped to represent the Asian soul food that Japanese and Koreans and Chinese have all taken back home and made their own. So our Nanban is an Asian Soul Food Restaurant with the intention of familiarizing the decadent and comforting flavors of our favorite Asian dishes across the board. We use what we know to make delicious, approachable but dynamic food that will warm the soul, tickle your palate, and depending on what you get... numb the mouth!

It's open 12:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday, and a menu is available online. It's located at 4407 Butler St. (map).

Pittsburgh Magazine released the results of its annual Best of Pittsburgh Reader's Poll, and Little Tokyo Restaurant in Mt. Lebanon has been voted Best Japanese/Sushi. Little Tokyo upsets the perennial winner Nakama, which is routinely voted Best Japanese/Sushi in annual readers' polls, ahead of more authentic places like Kiku, Teppanyaki Kyoto, and the recently-departed Chaya. Other relevant local winners include Nicky's Thai Kitchen as Best Thai and Sesame Inn as Best Chinese.

Xenophobic racism and violence directed at Asian and Asian Pacific Islander communities have increased during COVID. This session is designed to facilitate an initial dialogue to understand better the challenges facing our Asian and Asian American colleagues and students, and to explore ways to address and eliminate anti-Asian racism at the University of Pittsburgh.
Those interested in attending this session will be encouraged to:

• share experiences with and observations about anti-Asian racism.

• offer insights and ideas to create a University environment where everyone is safe and feels that they belong.

• suggest specific topic areas related to anti-Asian racism for future programming.

The 2019 Japanese animated film Children of the Sea (海獣の子供) will play in Pittsburgh on June 13 and 15 as part of this year's GKIDS series. A synopsis from the distributor:

When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. Ruka’s dad and the other adults who work at the aquarium are only distantly aware of what the children are experiencing as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans’ fish.

It will play locally at the AMC Loews Waterfront and the Cinemark theaters in McCandless, Monroeville, and Robinson, and tickets are available online. The June 13 show is dubbed in English while the June 15 show is in Japanese with English subtitles.

The Carnegie Museum of Art is hosting a series of "Inside Out" outdoors music events this summer, and the August 19 installment will feature Bento Boombox, "a dance party focused on the fusion of American and Asian hip hop, electronic, and high energy dance music."

On Thursday, August 19, enjoy happy hour in the museum's outdoor sculpture courtyard with a DJ set emphasizing Asian hip-hop and electronic music by Bento Boombox.

Bring your appetite, too! Regional food trucks and a bar created by Café Carnegie offering custom snacks, kid-friendly treats, local beers, delicious wines, and more will be on-site.

While you’re at Inside Out, participate in art-making activities for all ages.

Inside Out events are FREE, open to all ages, have limited capacity, and are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Make a day of it and reserve your timed tickets to visit the museum before or after you enjoy Inside Out!

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes Fresh International Market is among the new tenants interested in the Hill District's vacant Shop n' Save space.

Fresh International Market is believed to be one of the two groceries that submitted a proposal to the Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority to operate a store in the Hill, the Post-Gazette has learned.

The chain operates stores in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana and has others in the works in Raleigh, N.C., and St. Louis.

On its website, Fresh International Market bills itself as an “authentic Asian grocery for the most passionate food explorer.”

CMU student recruiting (paid) participants for Japanese Word-Guessing Study.

Christine Shi, a PhD student in Carnegie Mellon University's Second Language Acquisition program is recruiting participants in a Japanese Word-Guessing Study. Participants will be compensated $20 per hour; to be eligible, they: must be 18 years old; must be native English speakers, must not have any knowledge of Korean, Vietnamese, or Chinese; must not be non-heritage Japanese learners; and must have studied Japanese for more than two semesters.

Fundraiser underway for bronze marker for Pittsburgh's historic Chinatown.

The Organization of Chinese Americans is holding an online fundraiser for the purchase of a bronze plaque to mark Pittsburgh's Chinatown, which was recently awarded a state historical marker.

After 12 long years and 4 separate attempts, non-profit OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates of Pittsburgh has finally succeeded in getting official Pennsylvania historical landmark status for Downtown’s old Pittsburgh Chinatown! You can help us complete this project! We need $5000 to complete the bronze plaque made to the state’s specifications describing the designation. We hope to have a celebratory event this September in person!

"Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Cook-Along: Building Power One Meal at a Time," June 5.

APALA Pittsburgh will present the second of a two-part Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Cook-Along with local AAPI chefs, online June 5.

Chef Teodora Schipper ran restaurants in both Pittsburgh and Palawan before she retired. Teodora did cooking shows for Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, Carnegie Science Center with Lyn Parucci and The Anne Devlin Show on the WTAE channel.

All ticket sale and proceeds from the event will go to APALA Pittsburgh's COVID cash assistance fund that will support Asian, Asian American or Pacific Islander workers who experience hardship and are excluded from federal relief programs.

Last year APALA Pittsburgh distributed $65,400 in cash assistance to more than 70 families. We provided relief for restaurant workers who were laid off of faced heavily reduced hours but were unable to file for unemployment or receive stimulus checks. We provided relief for graduate student workers who continued to prep for classes and teach undergraduate students but lost part of their income.

Registration for the 6pm is required and the events is free, though donations are encouraged.
