Row House Cinema will present Gamera vs. Guiron with Onigiri on March 28, featuring rice balls from Highland Park's Teppanyaki Kyoto to eat while watching the 1969 kaiju film.

Snack on some Onigiri — aka adorable and savory filled rice cakes (one salmon and one regular) — from Teppanyaki Kyoto while you watch this campy and fun 1960s outer space monster movie!

Two young boys sneak aboard a spaceship and find themselves whisked away to the mysterious planet Terra. There, they encounter Gamera’s old foe Gyaos and two female aliens with a taste for human brains. Gamera must save the children and battle the new monster Guiron, whose entire body is a deadly living weapon.

The movie starts at 7:15, and Gamera vs. Guiron with Onigiri is one of several events already announced for the 2023 Pittsburgh Japanese Film Festival. The single-screen theater is located at 4115 Butler Street in Lawrenceville (map).

She'll be joined in conversation by Chatham University's Emerging Black Writer-In-Residence and local author Cameron Barnett (The Drowning Boy's Guide to Water, Autumn House Press). Pho and Roll Vietnamese Kitchen has recently opened in East Liberty at 216 N. Highland Ave. (map), the spot most recently occupied by Two Sisters Vietnamese Kitchen until its closure on December 31. The menu is primarily pho, of course, with a selection of other sides and entrees, including a number of spring, summer, and egg rolls. Pho and Roll is run by Tnon (Simon) Atapan, who has owned and operated Thai restaurants and groceries in the Chicago area for the last several years.

The 2003 movie Godzilla: Tokyo SOS (ゴジラ×モスラ×メカゴジラ 東京SOS) will play in Pittsburgh on March 22. A synopsis, from Toho Kingdom:

A year after the battle between Godzilla and Kiryu, Japan has begun repairs on the damaged mech. Work is focused on the damaged arm and chest areas, with weapon improvements planned. Meanwhile, Mothra's Shobijin meet with an old acquaintance, Doctor Shinichi Chujo. They warn that the dead should not be disturbed and the bones of the original Godzilla, which are inside Kiryu, should be returned. The message comes with a ray of hope: that Mothra will fight Godzilla on Japan's behalf if the request is met. However, if Japan ignores the request, then Mothra will once again become an enemy of humanity. Japan's government agrees that Kiryu's creation raises a moral question. City of Asylum will present "Contending with Monsters of Our Own Making with Jade Song" on April 1.

In this reading, novelist, writer, and art director Jade Song shares her visceral debut novel, Chlorine. This chilling and addictive work blurs the line between a literary coming-of-age narrative and a dark unsettling horror tale, creating a shrewd commentary on the trials of growing up in a society that puts monstrous pressure on young women and their bodies.

The novel centers on Ren Yu, a zealous swimmer whose daily life starts and ends with the pool. Her teammates are her only friends. Her coach, her guiding light. She aches to be in the water, dreaming of chlorine and imagining the chemicalized liquid will turn her into a mermaid—the creature of her obsessions. Pressure heaps upon Ren from every direction, from the boundary pushing of her overbearing and inappropriate coach, to the insistence of her parents that she get a scholarship and attend an Ivy League school. Kuniko Yamamoto and "Origami Tales" will be in Pittsburgh from May 19 to 21 as part of the EQT Children's Festival.

Welcome to the infinite world of Origami! In Japanese, ori- means "to fold" and -gami means "paper". Using origami, music and audience participation, storyteller Kuniko Yamamoto provides a magical entry into Japanese culture. In her show Origami Tales, mythological character masks and puppets, amazing flowers and a dragon – all made from origami – set the stage while Kuniko shares heartfelt stories from ancient Japan. Expect boundless imagination out of simple paper folding and an uplifting world of storytelling.

Yesterday Many More Asian Market shared updates on its upcoming move to a larger space this summer, to a building that will include not only larger floor space for inventory but also a food court.

Some of you might have already heard the news from the post we were tagged in…. Yes! We are moving into a bigger, newer, and more spacious location down the street at 2767 Liberty Ave Pittsburgh, Pa 15222.

During the move, our current location will still operate as normal.

The planned move will happen between June-August. The new space will accommodate not only Many More Asian Market that now carries both Asian and Western groceries , it will include a food court as well. The food court will feature an Asian bakery, bubble tea, Chinese BBQ, and Sushi stalls etc…Expect to enjoy delicious cake and drinks, freshly made roast duck and Char Siu, fresh sushi, and MANY MORE FOODS!!!! Yayyyyyy~~

Woooow! It’s crazy how time flies! We remember when the store first opened, we didn't even have a pos system yet…. Literally, did a soft opening with sticky notes everywhere, price tag stickers on items, checking out customer with a calculator and an old fashioned cash register. Back then, we thought to ourself while looking at the still half empty shelves “Wow, how much more stuff will we have to be able to sell in order to fill this store up?” Feeling anxious and nervous…. Then here we are today….Wayyyyyy out grew from where we were. Now our store feels tiny!!!!! Ahhhhhh!!

Thank you everyone, especially those who have been with us from the beginning when everything felt like chaos! You guys helped us grow into what we have become today! As a family owned business, we’ve been lucky to have shared our customers’ stories such as finding their first jobs, just getting married, starting a family etc… Seeing those families grow and come to the market, the feeling of being able to be a tiny part of our customers' lives means so much to us…. We hope you guys also feel great to be a huge part of our stories.

Reel Q Stories will present the 2013 Hong Kong film Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? (明天记得爱上我 明天記得愛上我) on February 22 at the City of Asylum.

Reel Stories is a free monthly film series dedicated to showcasing international queer cinema presented in partnership with Reel Q, Pittsburgh’s LGBTQ+ Film Festival. Starting in 1985, Reel Q’s mission is to increase the availability and accessibility of queer film in Pittsburgh and its surrounding region, highlighting the diverse experiences of our worldwide community. Reel Q is one of the oldest LGBTQ+ film festivals in the world.

February’s screening presents Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?, a 2013 romantic comedy directed by Arvin Chen. The film follows introverted optometrist Weichung who begins to question his marriage after learning his wife wants to have another baby. Weichung soon bumps into his old friend Stephen, who, though also married, lives the unconstrained life of a young gay bachelor. When Stephen teases Weichung for his newly straight-laced lifestyle, dormant emotions stir in Weichung, setting him off on a quest for true romance and desire.

The event starts at 7:00 pm and is free, both in person and online, though tickets are required. City of Asylum's Alphabet City is located at 40 W. North Ave. on the North Side (map).

Meccha Matcha is opening a Pittsburgh location soon at 2000 Murray Ave. in Squirrel Hill (map), in what was formerly Te Cafe. The University of Pittsburgh's Writing Program will have several events around visiting poet Paul Tran on March 28, open to the Pitt community. From their official site:

Paul Tran is the author of the debut poetry collection, All the Flowers Kneeling, published by Penguin. Their work appears in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Best American Poetry, and elsewhere. They earned their BA in History from Brown University and MFA in Poetry from Washington University in St. Louis. Winner of the Discovery/Boston Review Poetry Prize, as well as fellowships from the Poetry Foundation, Stanford University, and the National Endowment for the Arts, Paul is an Assistant Professor of English and Asian American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The 2022 Park Chan-wook film Decision to Leave (헤어질 결심), which played in Pittsburgh from October 28 through November 10, will return on February 13.

After gracing us with his presence six years ago with his sumptuous and sexually-charged period thriller, THE HANDMAIDEN, master filmmaker Park Chan-wook returns with one of his most dizzying and riveting cinematic concoctions yet. During its rapturous reception at the Cannes Film Festival this year, where it netted Park the Best Director Award, the film was likened to VERTIGO and BASIC INSTINCT. While neither of those tantalizing comparisons is completely off the mark, they shortchange a work of furious vision and invention that finds one of the world’s greatest filmmakers operating at the top of his powers. Hotshot Busan detective Hae-jun’s latest case finds him staring deep into the eyes of a dead hiker and then up at the vertiginous cliff from which he fell. Was this an accident or was foul play involved? This is the riddle he must unravel when he interrogates the man’s Chinese wife, Seo-rae, a caretaker who doesn’t seem particularly heartbroken by the tragedy. Hae-jun dives headfirst into the case, but as he looks deep into Seo-rae’s eyes for answers, a different truth is beginning to build within him.

Zen Shakuhachi Concert with Cornelius Boots, March 19 at Heinz Chapel.

Heinz Chapel will host "Zen Shakuhachi Concert & Meditation with Grandmaster Cornelius Boots" on March 19.

Cornelius Boots presents the living tradition of shakuhachi — the rare bamboo flute from ancient Japanese Buddhism. Meditation, music and nature form the roots of this earthy and ephemeral performing art. Natural bore (jinashi) and larger, low-pitched flutes (bass or alto) flutes are featured on this program: they provide a strong connection – for both the player and the listener – to a deeper, almost primeval past: echoes from the ancient days of the Earth.

The concert is $20 for general admission tickets, $10 for University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff, and free for University of Pittsburgh students. Heinz Chapel is located in Oakland, across the lawn from the Cathedral of Learning (map).
