University of Pittsburgh hiring full-time Instructor of Japanese.

The University of Pittsburgh's Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures is hiring a full-time Instructor of Japanese.
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time instructor of Japanese language position in the Japanese language program starting in the fall of 2025, pending budgetary approval. Candidates must have near-native or native language proficiency, hold at least a master’s degree in Japanese linguistics, language pedagogy, or studies, and be authorized to work for the University. At least two years of prior experience in teaching Japanese and prior experience in teaching with the performed culture approach is strongly preferred.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, as well as an Interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree in East Asian Studies. We provide quality Japanese language instruction to our students through a high number of contact hours (7 hours per week at the 1st and 2nd-year levels) and low maximum enrollments for our courses (a maximum of 12 students in recitation classes). Our programs are also supported by the University of Pittsburgh’s National East Asian Resource Center and Asian Studies Center.

Duties and responsibilities include:

Teaching six courses per year or equivalent

Holding office hours

Developing teaching materials as needed

Working with other faculty to further improve the Japanese language program

Attending meetings and/or events

Accepting departmental duties and assignments

Candidates should submit a letter of application, CV, teaching portfolio, and a brief description of how their research, teaching, and service demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion.  They should also provide the names and contact information of three persons who are able to provide confidential professional letters of recommendation (we do not need the letters themselves at this time, but we do need the names of the recommenders). Questions may be directed to Kelly Britcher, Faculty Actions and Recruitment Coordinator (ksb85@pitt.edu). The deadline for the receipt of applications will be five days from posting for full consideration.
