Pittsburgh Opera’s Madama Butterfly Panel Discussion: Women’s Role in Tech, Video Games, Manga, and Comic Books, March 13 in East Liberty.

Photo credit: Philip Groshon, Cincinnati Opera

The Carnegie Library branch in East Liberty will host "Pittsburgh Opera’s Madama Butterfly Panel Discussion: Women’s Role in Tech, Video Games, Manga, and Comic Books" on March 13.
Join us for a free panel discussion with RAD Pass participating organization Pittsburgh Opera where we will explore Women’s Role in Video Games, Anime, Manga, and Comic Books. Women have often been unrealistically represented in these art forms leading to detrimental outcomes in the real world. This discussion aims to unpack the origins of female representation in art and explore the fine line between fandom and fetish.

Pittsburgh Opera leads this discussion in anticipation of its groundbreaking new production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Created by an all-Japanese and Japanese American creative team, the story is set in a fantastical realm where reality and dreams intersect.

“The male protagonist, Pinkerton, puts on a VR headset and transports us into a vibrant virtual reality playground where he has ultimate control. As his avatar, a U.S. Navy Lieutenant, he can seduce and marry Cio-Cio San, his fantasy girl, and abandon her just as easily. But to Cio-Cio San, this is no game and the love and betrayal she feels is all too real.”

Attendees receive a discounted ticket offer to the performance of Madama Butterfly of their choice (March 22nd, 25th, 28th, and 30th) and will be entered into a raffle to receive a pair of free tickets. All performances of Madama Butterfly will take place downtown at the Benedum Center.
The event runs from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at 130 S. Whitfield St. in East Liberty (map). A reminder that Pittsburgh Opera is recruiting panelists for this event; those interested in participating should email Rebekah Diaz, Director, IDEA Initiatives/Community Engagement, at rdiaz@pittsburghopera.org.

Work progresses on Running Dish, a revolving sushi and all-you-can-eat hot pot and Korean BBQ place from the Sushi Bomb team, coming to the Waterfront.

Running Dish, a revolving sushi and all-you-can-eat hot pot and Korean BBQ place, will be among the newest revolving sushi and all-you-can-eat hot pot and Korean BBQ places in the Pittsburgh area. It was first announced for the Waterfront in September, and the shopping center now lists it on the directory as going into the spot across from Starbucks formerly occupied by Versona, Charming Charlie, and American Eagle.

Running Dish recently opened a location in Sterling, Virginia, a spot run by the ownership behind the Sushi Bomb in Robinson.

Conveyer belt sushi and all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and hot pot are two well-established concepts to come to Pittsburgh relatively recently. The international chain Kura Sushi opened here in September 2023, and Sushi Atarashi opened its revolving sushi restaurant in Robinson in October 2024. At least six all-you-can-eat BBQ and hot pot places have been announced as "coming soon" to the Pittsburgh area, but only Hong BBQ on McKnight Road has opened (though Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Grill is eyeing a January opening).

ASIA POP Net-Fluxed Korea: Squid Game, Acting in/on the Logic of Platform Economy, January 22 at Pitt.

The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Center will host Dr. Seung-hwan Shin and his talk "Net-Fluxed Korea: Squid Game, Acting in/on the Logic of Platform Economy" on January 22, part of this term's ASIA POP series.
Reflecting on the global success of Squid Game (Hwang Dong-hyuk, 2021) and its reinvention of the death game genre, this talk explores both the opportunities and challenges presented by new media systems, particularly global video streaming platforms, for local creators.

Netflix, renowned for decentralized approaches and departure from corporate-driven and center-to-local strategies in traditional media, allows for greater financial and creative freedom for local creators. However, concerns have arisen over Netflix’s dominance in local media landscapes and the overreliance of local creators on the platform giant, which would eventually lead to the demise of local media.

In exploring the rise of Netflix as the leading global platform, with a particular focus on its success in Korea, this talk thus aims first to articulate the double-edged nature of platform economy. In the latter part of the talk, attention shifts towards Squid Game itself, focusing on how it creatively adapted to the platform culture and how it questions contemporary capitalism through an innovative investment in the trope of survival game, where participants voluntarily enter the death game, rendering values such as free will empty promises.

Highlighting the show’s own dilemma between its anti-capitalist ethos and its success on Netflix, this talk also addresses the broader irony of resistance within the logic of platform economy that local production faces as the platform ecosystem continues to expand.
The talk runs from 6:00 to 7:15 pm in 149 Cathedral of Learning 4130 Posvar Hall (map).

2024 Japanese animated film The Colors Within (きみの色) in Pittsburgh, from January 23.

The 2024 Japanese animated film The Colors Within (きみの色) will play in Pittsburgh-area theaters from January 23.
Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colors’ of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true 'colors'?
It is scheduled to play locally, so far, at the Cinemark theater in Robinson through the 29th, though more locations are likely to be announced later. Tickets for the English-dubbed shows are available online now, with shows in Japanese with English subtitles likely to follow.
