"Storytime: Japanese and English" at Carnegie Library in East Liberty, October 15.

The next installment of the monthly program "Storytime: Japanese and English" will take place on October 15 at the Carnegie Library in East Liberty.
Celebrate our city’s diverse culture as we explore new words through songs, action rhymes and stories in both English and Japanese for children and their parents or caregivers. For children age 2 – 5 and their parents or caregivers.
It runs from 11:00 to 11:30 am. The library is located at 130 S. Whitfield St. (map).

KIIN Thai & Lao Eatery coming soon to Squirrel Hill.



Work progresses on KIIN Thai & Lao Eatery, coming soon to replace Bangkok Balcony at 5846 Forbes Ave. 2F (map). The Thai restaurant closed in September and the owner created an online investment campaign to fund the new concept. Signage on the door promises "a new menu, with fresh & delicious Thai and Lao food."

Samurai Films at Row House Cinema, November 1 - 7.



The Row House Cinema will run a Samurai Films series from November 1 through 7. The series is comprised of 1966's Sword of Doom (大菩薩峠), 1960's The Hidden Fortress (隠し砦の三悪人), 2002's The Twilight Samurai (たそがれ清兵衛), 1973's Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (子連れ狼 子を貸し腕貸しつかまつる), and 1954's The Seven Samurai (七人の侍). Taiwanese National Treasure (國家寶藏巡迴演講) mobile information session, October 12 at CMU.



Cafe Philo @ Pittsburgh will present a Chinese-language information session with three members of the New York-based Taiwan National Treasure Foundation on October 12 at Carnegie Mellon University. The event starts at 2:00 pm at 4623 Wean Hall (map).

William Tsutsui and "Godzilla on my Mind," 1954's Gojira (ゴジラ ) October 16 at Pitt.



Dr. William Tsutsui will speak on "Godzilla on my Mind" and introduce a screening of the original Japanese Godzilla film on October 16 as part of the University of Pittsburgh's International Week. A synospis of Tsutsui's book of the same name:
Ever since Godzilla (or, Gojira, as he is known in Japan) crawled out of his radioactive birthplace to cut a swath of destruction through Tokyo, he has claimed a place alongside King Kong and others in the movie monster pantheon. He is the third most recognizable Japanese celebrity in the United States, and his fan base continues to grow as children today prove his enduring appeal. Now, Bill Tsutsui, a life-long fan and historian, takes a light-hearted look at the big, green, radioactive lizard, revealing how he was born and how he became a megastar. With humorous anecdotes, Godzilla on My Mind explores his lasting cultural impact on the world. This book is sure to be welcomed by pop culture enthusiasts, fans, and historians alike.

2019 Takashi Miike film First Love (初恋) in Pittsburgh, October 18 - 24.



The 2019 Takashi Miike film First Love (初恋) will play in Pittsburgh from October 18 through 24. The distributor provides a brief summary:
The film is the prolific auteur, Takashi Miike, at his most fun and anarchic, a noir-tinged yakuza film blending genres in the story of a young boxer and a call girl, who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo.
It will play at one of the Pittsburgh Filmmakers cinemas---Regent Square or Harris Theater---though showtime and ticket information has not yet been announced.
