Lunar New Year 2020 Cultural Festival, January 25 in Squirrel Hill.

Pittsburgh's fifth annual Lunar New Year celebration will start on January 25 with a cultural festival in Squirrel Hill. It will run from 12:00 to 4:00 pm (slight change from the original announcement) at St. Edmund's Academy and will feature martial arts performances, dances, food, crafts, and more. St. Edmunds Academy is located at 5705 Darlington Ave., next to the Jewish Community Center (map).

The 2019 Chinese movie Adoring (宠爱) will play in Pittsburgh from January 3. A synopsis from the distributor:
Pet center owner and vet Vivian provides medical care for all pets in the community; she witnesses six heart-warming stories among the pets and their owners. The six stories are interconnected with laughter and tears, until every family’s problem is eventually resolved. The pets and their humans then live happily ever after.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will continue to offer free Chinese, Japanese, and Korean classes at some of its branches the first month of the new year. Check out the class information below in addition to its language resources on the shelves and online.

As the library notes: these classes are free; registration is not required; no materials are needed and nothing needs to be bought; new participants are welcome at any time; classes are for adults (unless otherwise noted) but well-behaved young people are welcome to join as well.

Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し), Kiki's Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便) at Rangos Giant Cinema in February.




The Miyazaki films Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し) and Kiki's Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便) will play at the Rangos Giant Cinema at the Carnegie Science Center on February 1 and 2, respectively. Tickets for the 4:00 pm shows are now available online. The Carnegie Science Center is located at 1 Allegheny Ave. on the North Shore (map), accessible via the Allegheny T Station, in turn accessible by a number of city buses that run downtown.

New Chinese movie Only Cloud Knows (只有芸知道) continues in Pittsburgh through December 31.



The new Chinese movie Only Cloud Knows (只有芸知道), which opened in Pittsburgh on December 20, will continue through (at least) December 31.
Dongfeng (HUANG Xuan) is a middle-aged man living in New Zealand. He has been suffering from sorrow and loneliness ever since the death of his beloved wife, Yun (YANG Caiyu). Unable to overcome his grief, Dongfeng instead decides to retrace the journey he shared with Yun and fulfill a dream that she never had the chance to fulfill.

Pipa performer Yang Jin on WQED's Voice of the Arts.



On December 18, WQED FM's Voice of the Arts podcast spoke with Yang Jin, a Pittsburgh-based pipa soloist and educator.
Yang Jin is a pipa performer based here in Pittsburgh. She has performed with ensembles like the Silk Road Ensemble and Afro Yaqui, and she recently created her new initiative, Yang Jin and Friends. Reputed as the leading pipa soloist of her generation, Yang Jin tells us more about the instrument, her upcoming performances, and her recent collaborations -- and she even plays some music for us.
