Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓), Hiroshima Mon Amour at Row House Cinema, August 4 - 10; Black Rain (黒い雨) for one-night-only screening, August 6.


The Japanese film Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓) and the 1959 French film Hiroshima Mon Amour will play at the Row House Cinema from August 4 through 10 as part of its War What is it Good For? film series. The 1989 Japanese film Black Rain (黒い雨) will have a screening on August 6 paired with a panel discussion by local group Remembering Hiroshima, Imagining Peace. Tickets are available online. The single-screen theater is located at 4115 Butler Street in Lawrenceville (map).

Eric Nam performing in Pittsburgh, October 6.


Korean-American singer Eric Nam will perform in Pittsburgh on October 6, as part of his "House on the Hill" tour.
Eric Nam is a multifaceted entertainer, singer, songwriter, and TV personality fluent in English, Korean, Spanish, and conversational in Mandarin. Named GQ Korea’s Man of the Year, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia, Eric is a household name and one of the most extensively touring and best-selling artists out of Korea. He is currently headlining a sold-out world tour playing 59 headline shows across 54 cities.

Eric released his first album as an independent artist, titled “There And Back Again”, in January 2022, which debuted at #3 and #7 on the US and UK Spotify Charts and peaked at the #22 spot for albums sold on Billboard.

In addition to music, Eric hosts the #1 K-Pop podcast, “Daebak Show”, which earned Apple Podcasts’ Best Listens of 2019.
He last performed in Pittsburgh in February 2022. This time he's at the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks (map) at 7:00 pm, and tickets are available onilne.

Ramen chain Kyuramen coming to Pittsburgh.


National ramen chain Kyuramen is opening its first Pittsburgh-area location in East Liberty. It will be located at 6204 Penn Ave. at Eastside Bond (map), which also recently put up signage for the area's first Korean bakery Tous Les Jours. Kyuramen is aiming for an early-2024 opening.

Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Grill is coming soon to McCandless Crossing in the North Hills, according to signage that recently went up. The owners also operate Shabu Shabu Hot Pot & Grill in Nashville, Tennessee, which offers all you can eat hot pot, sushi, and BBQ.

Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Grill will join Hong BBQ & Hot Pot on McKnight Road and KPOT in Squirrel Hill as three new all-you-can-eat hot pot and BBQ places coming soon to the Pittsburgh area.

2022 Japanese animated film The First Slam Dunk in Pittsburgh from July 27.


The 2022 Japanese animated film The First Slam Dunk will play in Pittsburgh from July 27.
Shohoku's "speedster" and point guard, Ryota Miyagi, always plays with brains and lightning speed, running circles around his opponents while feigning composure. Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota had a brother who was three years older. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a famous local player from a young age, Ryota also became addicted to basketball. In his second year of high school, Ryota plays with the Shohoku High School basketball team along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui as they take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship. And now, they are on the brink of challenging the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School.
Wikipedia notes it won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in 2023. It is scheduled to play locally at the AMC Loews Waterfront and the Cinemark theater in Robinson. Tickets are available online; please note, some screenings are dubbed in English while others are in Japanese with English subtitles.

Hong BBQ & Hot Pot, with all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and Hot Pot, coming to McKnight Road.


Signage recently went up for Hong BBQ & Hot Pot at 4801 McKnight Road (map), in the spot that used to hold several Asian buffets over the past decade, including Tokyo Sushi Buffet, TJ Buffet, Happy Home Buffet. According to its website Hong BBQ & Hot Pot has a location in Tampa, with locations coming soon to Bradenton, Grandville, and Pittsburgh. This comes after the news in May of KPOT, another Korean BBQ and Hot Pot chain, also opening in Pittsburgh soon.

The 2022 Chinese movie Lost in the Stars (消失的她), which opened in Pittsburgh on July 7, will remain here through at least July 19.
He Fei's wife, Li Muzi, disappeared during their anniversary trip. When she reappeared, he insisted that she was not his wife. As Chen Mai, a top lawyer gets involved in this bizarre case, more mysteries started to emerge.
